Plane crashes into VIP lounge

Browsing the web today, I came across this report on the BBC news website about a plane which experienced technical difficulties and had to return to Kigali Airport in Rwanda.

The plane turned back to the airport, but crashed after making an emergency landing.

Investigations are currently under way to determine what went wrong

Special VFR

The following video clip is of a landing into a French airfield (LFBH) under “special VFR”

Whether or not this was legal is left to the observer …. personally I wouldn’t want to attempt this without a full IR (or at least an IMC within UK airspace).

Sadly, this is the sort of weather we get in the UK a lot … with EASA talking of binning the IMC rating, and replacing it with something that has even less teeth, I suspect we may see more pilots attempting this “SVFR” without the training that the IMC or a full IR offers.

So just what went wrong ….

Another YouTube star is born. This time, it’s a runway overshoot on St. Barthélemy’s notoriously short runway 10/28. Several readers drew our attention to this video, and we’ve done an analysis on what went wrong. St. Bart’s is short, all right, but really not that different from a hundred other runways cluttered up with trees, towers, and close-in terrain. This is a stark, metal-bending lesson in airspeed control.

NTSB conclude downdrafts killed Fossett

The National Transportation Safety Board has determined in a report that adventurer Steve Fossett was most likely killed while trying to escape downdrafts that exceeded the performance of his Bellanca 8KCAB Decathlon.
